Modern World History
Centered on an award-winning, 26-part PBS television series: People’s Century. People’s Century offers a fresh, compelling retrospective of the 20th century, which reveals the unprecedented role ordinary people around the world played in shaping our times. Using dramatic on-the-scenes footage–some never before seen–and interviews with people caught up in struggles and triumphs, terrors and joys, the series recounts the stories behind the century’s most significant moments. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/peoplescentury/about/index.html This class meets twice a week. We will view the PBS series, plus work on assignments and extension activities based on the corresponding web resources.
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:45 – 12:00, September 4 – December 6 (14 weeks). This is the first semester of a class that is scheduled to continue for another semester in the spring, details to be determined later.

Modern “Salon”
During the Enlightenment, it was fashionable to invite noted literary figures, philosophers, artists, or other interesting people for discussions. This class reinvents the salon, drawing from conversational tangents or topics in the students’ lives. I anticipate that we will touch on areas of economics, philosophy, art, politics, and current events, to name a few. Discussions will lead to voluntary assignments to research and present to the group. This class meets once a week.
